Who are you?

Who are you

Someone once asked me “who are you?” I launched into a familiar response of what I did. I said I worked as the Business Manager for a professional speaker, I was married with two boys and I lived in the northern suburbs of Brisbane. The person quickly stopped me and said no, I don’t want to know what you do I want to know who you are. Who is Claire Massingham?

I couldn’t answer that question straight away because I had never really thought about who I was. I had always defined myself by what I did.

It really messed with my head. Who the hell was Claire Massingham!

Since that conversation many years ago I have thought long and hard about who I am and who I want to be. What legacy do I want to leave in this world when I am gone.

I used to think I was unique!

Many years ago I read that every one of us is unique. In fact I still read that everywhere. And then one day I read another book saying that we are not unique at all. Every single person in this world is made up of the same matter and we all come from the same source which is love. Therefore underneath all of our layers we are all the exactly the same. We are not unique at all.

Now that really screwed with my head. I loved thinking that I was unique and that no one person was special like Claire Massingham. Gotta love your ego don’t you.

So who am I?

I have come to believe that we are all on this planet to remember who we really are. AND that is brave courageous spirits living in a human body. We know we are love but we are here to fully experience it. Knowing something and experiencing something are two different things. I know of the word love and I can read its definition but until I experience love I can’t truly understand it. Love comes in so many different forms that we can spend a lifetime experiencing all of them.

If you asked me who Claire Massingham was today my answer would be this: I am a gentle spirit travelling through this human life trying every day to be as kind and compassionate as I can. Not always getting it right though because I am in a human body and fear often becomes my modus operandi. I can be negative, unkind and gossipy at the best of times. The beauty of this though is that in every moment I get to recreate who I want to be. If I keep redirecting my compass towards love I will hopefully spend most of this lifetime being the kind, compassionate and caring person that I want to be. Now that’s the stuff that makes me happy.
